valentines day flowers him - My Melbourne: Paul Verhoeven

Where do you live?
Right in the middle of Melbourne, about a block from Degraves. This means I’m close enough to enjoy everything the city has to offer, and I’m also in the perfect spot to dress up as a bat and fight injustice by night. To any police writing reports on my exploits, it’s not ‘some bat guy’. It’s ‘Batman’. Get it right.valentines day flowers him
Favourite spot for a summer drink?
The Standard is a fantastic place for drinking during summer. It has a great little outdoors area, which helps me lie to myself about being outdoors enough to offset all the time I spend reading/gaming/sharpening Batarangs. Also, Vic Markets do the Suzuki Night Market, which is an amazing way to eat wonderful cheap food and sweat eight times your body weight in one session.

Best place to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon in Melbourne?
Playing croquet in Carlton Gardens, followed by drinks at Workshop, a wonderful bar on Elizabeth Street. Croquet is one of the only sports which actually encourages vintage colonial British smacktalk, so inevitably you’re going to need a stiff drink afterwards. I recommend a gin and tonic made with Hendrick's. I also recommend NOT attacking opponents with the mallet.

Where would we find you on a hot summer night?
When I’m not spraying the cheese of justice on the taco of evil? Well, I’m either at home reviewing games (read: gaming in my boxers and eating sugary cereal) or over at Rooftop Bar. Incidentally, Rooftop Cinema is showing stuff right now. They showed Purple Rain recently. It takes titanium balls to project Prince on a screen at that altitude.

My first stop for summer clothing would be…
Footscray Savers. Footscray has awesome, cheap bahn mi to help you fuel up before diving into the morass of second hand clothing. Incidentally, I was there once on a tweed hunt and managed to lose my monocle. If you find it, you can keep it, just, you know...pay it forward.

The thing I love most about Melbourne in summer is…
Honestly, I’m a winter guy. But Melbourne has such a bipolar weather system that even when it’s hot in the morning, there’s a perfectly decent chance it’ll be hailing glass later that day. Which makes hopping between venues on a night out a lot like a psychotic elf covered in honey: unpredictable, and potentially sticky.

And the least? valentines day flowers him
The smell of flowers in the air. The images of frivolity and mirth it conjures up enrage me.

Favourite summer weekend getaway?
Port Fairy is a few hours from Melbourne by train, but it’s basically a rustic little fishing village, making it the perfect location for exploring beaches, sleeping in, and participating in witness protection.

What’s on your summer reading/watching/listening list?
Summer is the perfect time to catch up and read Fables, the incredible graphic novel series that combines fairy tales and gritty urban realism. It also has at least one talking wolf detective, so that’s a plus. You can pick the  whole series up at the fantastic All Star Comics over on Lonsdale Street. Also, the 40th anniversary edition of Tago Mago, the stunning, trippy album by Can is out. If there’s one thing this summer needs, it’s a confusing headtrip of an album. And as far as films go, The Adventures of Tintin ticked every box for me.
